After an apparently successful test, Twitter rolled out 280 character tweets for everyone this week.
And as expected, the Internet blew up. The move received coverage in major media outlets like The Washington Post and The New York Times.
The adoption by users and brands is just starting. We're noticing a few tweets in the "moderately expanded" range of 140-180 characters, as Tweeters get used to the new format. Brevity has long been prized on Twitter, so it will be interesting to see just how much the average tweet length increases. We'll put some charts up about this in the future.
That being said, some accounts wasted no time in trying out the full extent of 280 characters.
A prominant actor colorfully expresses his reaction:
#280characters? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-it!
